I moved downstairs to
this flat in September 2004 when the flat became
vacant. I hadn't done any gardening for years,
but looked forward to the challenge. Wonder if
it is my fault that we have had rotten weather ever
since. Good weather comes along early and then
clobbers the plants before they have a chance.
The garden surface
itself is Hell! There is about 4 " of very bad
soil, then a 6" layer of roadstone, covering clay,
so nothing grows too well and it is murder
trying to dig down. To combat this situation,
a weed suppressing membrane was laid and covered
with gravel. pots, tubs and all sorts of
containers have been used for growing. A
couple of dug areas have been made, but they are
about to get covered too. Nothing seems to
grow there, even after digging in compost from the
two compost bins I have. The compost out of
the bins grows veg and flowers well in the
containers and hanging baskets - providing I water
and feed them on a regular basis.
The fences have
climbers - roses, clematis, passion flowers
scrambling over them. I've also trained
pyracanthus and cotoneaster over them to discourage
climbing into my garden and to discourage them
digging up what soil patches there are, I plant
Coleus Canina (Scardy Cat Plant) in pots, so that I
can move them around to different area.
The veg I grow
are mainly salad types, radish, onions, carrots,
beetroot and plenty of Cut and Come Again leaves,
potatoes, runner, dwarf and broad beans, herbs,
onions and garlic. I like to grow lots of
beetroot so that they can be pickled. The
beans and sweetcorn end up in the freezer, though
you can't beat them fresh.
Most of the
flowering plants come from either the local market
or
Jersey Plants Direct.
